Happy Lent! It has become a Second Grade tradition to do a class service project during Lent. The students collect canned goods for the Maple Shade Food Bank and set out to earn those canned goods by doing chores at home and instead of receiving money they ask their parents to pay them with “canned goods”. Two years ago, the 2nd grade set the bar high and hoped to bring in 500 canned goods during the six weeks of Lent and thus “FEED 500” was born. Within days, the class project grew to a school-wide service effort and by the end of Lent, “FEED 500” had become “FEED 1,500”.
Well, we are once again taking our Lenten alms-giving seriously and are asking for you to join together with us in order to make this year's dream a reality. Last year's 2nd grade set the bar high and we have chosen to walk in their footsteps. After reading the story Small Gifts in God's Hands by Max Lucado, which is a retelling of the Gospel story of the multiplication of the Loaves and fishes, this year's 2nd graders are reaching for the stars and once again calling this year's canned goods project, “FEED 5,000”. We believe this can happen if we all work together.
Please accept our challenge, “To Serve Others in the Spirit of Christ”. One small basket of food fed the multitudes and so can we.
May the OLPH School family make the Gospel come to life today as we choose to live LENT.
We hope you will do your best as a class to bring in as many canned goods as you can. Please don't forget to check the expiration date to ensure that the cans have not expired.
Happy collecting! Happy Lent!
